The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) aims to promote the identification, protection, and preservation of cultural and natural heritage that is of exceptional significance to humankind around the world. This is codified in the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, which was adopted by UNESCO in 1972.

The concept of World Heritage is unique in that it can be applied anywhere. World Heritage sites belong to all peoples of the world, regardless of where they are located on the globe.

Mission

UNESCO’s World Heritage mission is to
Encourage countries to sign the World Heritage Convention                      Encourage States Parties to the Convention to nominate sites within their national
and to ensure the protection of their natural and cultural heritage;              territory for inclusion on the World Heritage List;
Encourage States Parties to establish management plans and                  Help States Parties safeguard World Heritage properties by
set up reporting systems on the state of conservation of                            providing technical assistance and professional training;
